About the growth, flowering, and appearance Mahonia media 'Charity' grows into a large, upright shrub approximately 1.5 to 3 meters tall. The shrub forms sturdy branches with large, glossy, spiny leaves that remain on the plant all year round. As a result, it provides a green and full effect in the garden even outside the flowering period. Flowering usually takes place from December to February. During this time, the long, bright yellow flower plumes appear, which stand out not only for their color but also for their delightful wintry appearance. In an otherwise bare garden, this bloom immediately draws attention. After flowering, blue-grey berries may form. These provide the plant with additional ornamental value later in the season and are also appreciated by birds. Care Mahonia 'Charity' grows well in full sun or partial shade. A somewhat sheltered location is preferred so that the foliage is less likely to be damaged by strong winds or harsh winter conditions. The plant has few demands regarding the soil, as long as it is sufficiently well-drained and preferably rich in humus. After planting, it is advisable to water sufficiently during dry periods so that the shrub can root well. A mulch layer of compost or leaf mold around the base of the plant helps keep the soil moist and airy and supports growth. Pruning Mahonia media 'Charity' requires little pruning. Those who wish to keep the plant compact or rejuvenate old branches should do so in the spring, after flowering. Old or overly long branches can then be cut back to maintain the shrub's attractive shape. Because the plant naturally has a beautiful upright growth habit, heavy pruning is usually not necessary. Winter care This Mahonia shrub is very hardy and is at its most beautiful in winter due to its striking bloom. Young plants may appreciate some extra shelter during their first winter in a very exposed or windy spot, but once well-rooted, Mahonia 'Charity' is a strong and reliable garden plant. Because the plant is evergreen, it continues to provide structure and color even in winter. For lovers of winter flowering
