13-Column Wooden Abacus With Functional Reset

A purpose-built 13-rod wooden abacus grounded in proven pedagogical design. The frame is made from responsibly harvested hardwood, sanded to a fine finish and sealed with food-safe oil. Each rod holds five beads: one red upper bead (value 5) and four blue lower beads (value 1), mounted on rigid, straight wooden dowels for consistent alignment and smooth sliding. Overall size: 28.5 cm (length) × 7.5 cm (width) × 2.5 cm (height); weight approx. 280 g. The reset mechanism consists of a steel-reinforced plastic lever running beneath the rods — actuated by gentle thumb pressure to reset all beads synchronously. Four recessed rubber feet ensure stability on any flat surface without slipping or scratching. This abacus supports explicit teaching of number bonds, partitioning strategies and step-by-step computation — especially helpful for learners needing reinforcement of ‘making ten’ or bridging across decades. Its physical constraints encourage deliberate, sequential thinking — countering the impulsive responses common with digital tools. Widely endorsed by UK maths consultants for use in mastery lessons, SEND provision and parental engagement workshops. Also serves as a functional desk companion for freelancers managing invoices, small business owners balancing ledgers manually, or language learners practising number pronunciation through tactile repetition — blending utility, tradition and quiet intentionality.
