Hypoestes phyllostachya 'Pronto Red' Ø6cm

Hypoestes phyllostachya 'Pronto Red' is a captivating decorative houseplant with vivid red-spotted leaves that bring a striking splash of colour to any interior. From the Acanthaceae family, this compact cultivar from the Pronto series impresses with its dense foliage and natural branching habit. Easy to care for and ideal for beginners, it fills your home with vibrant, ever-changing leaf patterns. Growth and development Hypoestes phyllostachya 'Pronto Red' develops a compact, dense habit with moderate but steady growth under optimal cultivation conditions. The stems are slender, herbaceous, slightly pubescent, green with purple undertones, branching naturally to form a small, well-proportioned bush. In 6-centimetre pots, the plant typically reaches a height of 10 to 15 centimetres with a similar spread, creating a harmonious, nearly spherical silhouette. Growth rate is directly influenced by the amount of light received: under bright indirect light, the plant grows vigorously, producing new leaves at intervals of just a few days, each displaying the characteristic intense colouration. Under insufficient light, growth slows and - more importantly - the colours progressively fade, with green gaining ground at the expense of red. This phenomenon, known as 'reversion to green,' is reversible: moving the plant to a brighter position gradually restores chromatic intensity. A distinguishing feature of the Pronto series cultivars is their natural tendency towards basal branching, which reduces the need for frequent pinching compared to other Hypoestes varieties. Nevertheless, periodic tip-pinching remains beneficial, stimulating lateral branching and preventing excessive stem elongation. The plant responds excellently to formative pruning, regenerating rapidly from lateral nodes. Care requirements are moderate, making 'Pronto Red' a suitable choice for both experienced growers and those at the beginning of their indoor gardening journey: Light: Bright indirect or filtered light. An east- or west-facing window is ideal. Avoid intense direct summer sun, which can scorch the leaves, but ensure sufficient brightness to maintain vivid colours. 2-3 hours of gentle morning sun are welcome. Temperature: Optimal range 18-24°C. Tolerates drops to 15°C, but below 12°C the plant suffers. Avoid cold draughts and proximity to direct heat sources. Watering: Keep the substrate slightly moist without allowing it to dry out completely between waterings. Water when the top 2 centimetres of substrate feel dry to the touch. Reduce frequency in winter. Avoid waterlogging in the saucer. Humidity: Prefers elevated humidity (50-60%). Periodic foliar misting, placement on a tray of damp pebbles, or proximity to other tropical plants helps maintain optimal levels. Substrate: Quality universal potting mix, well-drained, enriched with perlite or vermiculite for aeration. Ideal pH: 5.5-6.5. Repotting is done in spring, into pots only 1-2 centimetres larger. Fertilisation: Balanced liquid fertiliser (NPK 10-10-10 or 20-20-20), diluted to half the recommended concentration, applied fortnightly during the growing season (March-September). Do not fertilise in winter. Propagation: By stem cuttings placed in water or directly into moist substrate. Cuttings of 8-10 centimetres with 2-3 nodes root in 2-3 weeks. Spring and summer are the optimal periods. Specifications Pot diameter: 6 cm Total height (incl. pot): 10 cm
